Bioscopy Project Kicks Off in Grand Style

Collaboration Across India and Norway Ushers in the Future of Microscopy Research

We are delighted to announce the official launch of the Bioscopy project—a pioneering initiative that promises to redefine microscopy education and research. Led by Professor Krishna Agarwal (UiT – The Arctic University of Norway) and Professor Biswajit Chowdhury (IIT(ISM) Dhanbad), Bioscopy is funded by the Indo-Norwegian Cooperation Programme Grant and backed by Norway’s Directorate for Higher Education and Skills and India’s University Grants Commission (UGC).

Multi-Day Event at IIT(ISM) Dhanbad

The inauguration took place over a three-day period at the conference hall in the administrative block of IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, forming a centerpiece of the institute’s centenary celebrations. Scientists, students, and administrators came together from:

  • IIT(ISM) Dhanbad
  • AcSIR (Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research)
  • UiT – The Arctic University of Norway

Attendees exchanged insights on how cutting-edge microscopy techniques can propel scientific discovery and educational innovation.

Dignitaries and Collaborators

The launch event was enriched by addresses and support from esteemed speakers:

  • Dr. Acquino Vimal, Indian Ambassador to Norway (participated virtually)
  • Prof. Jan-Gunnar Winther, Pro-Rector of UiT
  • Prof. Manoj Dhar, Director of AcSIR
  • Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director of IIT(ISM) Dhanbad
  • Prof. Krishna Agarwal, Principal Investigator (UiT)
  • Prof. Biswajit Chowdhury, Co-Principal Investigator (IIT(ISM) Dhanbad)

SEER: A Sister Project in AI and Climate Monitoring

While Bioscopy focused on advanced microscopy and education, the event also commemorated the launch of SEER, a project spearheaded by Professor Dilip K. Prasad (UiT). SEER aims to train students and researchers in the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Earth observation and climate monitoring, reinforcing the broader Indo-Norwegian commitment to innovative and impactful research.

Key Themes and Discussions

Throughout the event:

  • Shared Vision: Leaders from India and Norway emphasized the crucial role of international partnerships in pushing scientific boundaries, particularly in microscopy and AI.
  • Educational Exchanges: Discussions highlighted plans to facilitate student and researcher mobility between India and Norway, enriching curricula with global perspectives.
  • Global Challenges: Speakers and panelists noted that climate change and sustainability are pressing priorities, with both SEER and Bioscopy positioned to offer transformative approaches to these challenges.
