International mobility for training and education in advanced research and education

Funded by HKDIR

The “Bioscopy” project aims to address a significant gap between the microscopy development community and the user community which has occurred due to outdated microscopy education. The Bioscopy project will develop four semester-long joint courses, each worth 10 ECTS and five short-term intensive courses, delivered as summer schools or winter workshops. These courses will focus on immediate upskilling on modern topics like super-resolution optical microscopy and AI for microscopy data.

Bioscopy aims to create unprecedented educational tools, such as low-cost, robust, easy-to-align build-your-own microscope kits. These kits will empower students and researchers to gain hands-on experience in microscopy, regardless of the availability of advanced local facilities. Additionally, the project will propose digital video books of visual experiments, providing step-by-step guidance on laboratory work to significantly enhance understanding and retention of complex concepts. Furthermore, the project will explore the development of new textbooks on cutting-edge topics in microscopy, filling a crucial gap in the existing educational resources.

The Bioscopy project will engage PhD and master’s students in at least 10 pilot research projects that require collaboration across different scientific disciplines. These projects will address challenging research questions that cannot be solved within a single discipline.

To ensure the long-term impact of the project, the team will evaluate the feasibility of applying for joint research funding and a COST Action application to establish a full-fledged international master’s degree program in microscopy. This would further solidify the project’s contributions to global education and research.
